What Is Repair Affair?

Repair Affair is PWC's annual spring volunteer event, providing home repairs and modifications that enable low-income, elderly and disabled residents to remain safely in their homes. Individuals, businesses and community groups can volunteer for a day (in some cases, more than one day) to help a client with various home repair needs, ranging from the simple - fixing handrails and installing grab bars; to the more extensive - home modifications for the disabled, ramps, drywall, etc.

Repair Affair was developed by People Working Cooperatively in 1983 as a free outreach program to help very low-income elderly and disabled homeowners with the home repairs they need to keep their homes safe and habitable. Low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners are often the most vulnerable residents in a community. When they physically or financially lose the ability to care for their homes, their quality of life can diminish.

When you volunteer for Repair Affair, you are not only helping a neighbor who needs you, you are making a real and immediate impact in your community.

What kinds of repairs are performed during Repair Affair?

Repairs range in complexity from one home to the next, but may include the following:

  • Plumbing: vanities, faucets, laundry tubs, drain traps, fluid masters, toilets
  • Carpentry: ramps, handrails, grab bars
  • Safety Repairs: smoke detectors, locks
  • Structural Work: gutter replacement, drywall, concrete
  • Electrical Work
  • Miscellaneous Household Chores: cleaning gutters, washing windows, yard work

Will trained professionals be available to help volunteers?

Yes. PWC assigns a skilled crew leader to each Repair Affair work site. The crew leader will lead the team of volunteers through a detailed work order provided by PWC and volunteers will be assigned tasks based on their skill sets and levels of experience. PWC staff members are also assigned to homes to answer questions, lend a hand, or simply provide guidance to teams.

How are clients selected for Repair Affair?

As a Repair Affair volunteer, please know that you'll be serving real people with a real need for help. Prospective clients are thoroughly pre-screened to ensure they qualify for the services rendered as part of Repair Affair. The typical PWC client earns less than $13,500 a year and is facing hardship due to illness, job loss, death of a spouse, or other life changing events.

Does PWC have a Young Professionals group volunteering at Repair Affair?

How do I register as a volunteer for Repair Affair? 

Call Aaron at 513-351-7921 to sign up a team.  Each individual needs to register online (see link "Register for Repair Affair 2014").  The deadline to sign up a team is April 23.  Individuals that are part of a team can continue to register until the day of.  If you have missed the April 23 deadline, you can do your project on the following Saturday..
